Perplexity Citations: What Website Owners Can Verify

Perplexity citations can help readers find the sources behind an AI-generated answer. For website owners, the useful task is to check whether pages are accessible, whether the information answers a real question, and whether an observed citation actually supports the claim. A citation is an observation to investigate, rather than proof that a particular formatting rule caused a ranking.

Start with the current product documentation

Developers maintaining an older Sonar integration should review Perplexity’s migration guidance. Perplexity states that Sonar Chat Completions support ended on 27 September 2026. Existing synchronous and streaming calls are being reformulated as Agent API requests; asynchronous Sonar requests are no longer supported. Check the current migration instructions before reusing an older tutorial.

Record which interface you are evaluating. A result observed in an API experiment should not be presented as a confirmed result from the consumer website. Keep the date, product, model or configuration where available, and the original answer alongside your notes.

Separate search results from a generated answer

Perplexity’s Search API guide describes structured, ranked web results for an application to process. It distinguishes this from the Agent API, which can generate an answer with citations. That distinction matters when planning a test: retrieving a page and citing it in an answer are different observations.

A practical review sheet can record the question, the retrieved URLs when available, the cited URLs and whether each citation supports the nearby statement. Leave fields blank when the interface does not expose them. Do not infer hidden retrieval stages or scoring weights from a numbered source list.

Check access before changing the article

Perplexity’s crawler documentation distinguishes PerplexityBot from Perplexity-User. The former supports search discovery; the latter handles user-requested visits. The documentation also explains that these settings operate independently and that user-requested fetching generally ignores robots.txt.

Review your own robots rules and server logs against the current provider guidance. Record the URL, response status and relevant access rule. Treat crawl access as one technical check, not as evidence that the page will be selected or cited.

Improve the reader’s decision

Choose one question the page should answer. Put the answer where a reader can find it, explain any conditions and link the evidence needed to check it. Use a table when people need to compare the same attributes across options; use prose when the explanation needs context.

For a technical tutorial, identify the tested environment, prerequisites and expected result. Label illustrative code clearly and describe the limits of any example. If the article claims an original experiment, provide the method and supporting material before presenting its results as measured evidence.

These are editorial review practices. This guide does not establish a preferred answer length, a guaranteed citation position or a provider ranking formula.

Run a small, documented review

Select a set of questions relevant to your actual customers and repeat the same recording process. Preserve useful counterexamples: a page that was cited once but omitted later is part of the evidence, not a result to discard.

Change one part of an article at a time when practical. Keep the earlier version, the edit date and the reason for the change. Compare citation observations with actual referral visits and qualified enquiries, while acknowledging the other factors that may have changed.

Choose the next useful action

Start with our technical SEO checklist if access or canonical signals are unclear. Use our information gain guide to review whether a page contributes useful evidence rather than repeating existing claims.

The goal is a page that readers can understand and verify. Where the provider has not published an algorithm detail, describe your uncertainty instead of filling the gap with an invented rule.

Some recommendations may include affiliate links. Read the disclosure next to each tool and verify current details with its provider.
