Reddit, OpenAI and Content Licensing: What Publishers Should Know

Reddit licensing, automated crawling and citations in AI answers are different mechanisms. A change in one does not establish that a partnership ended or that a source disappeared from every answer. This guide separates documented announcements from conclusions the evidence does not support.
What Reddit and OpenAI announced
On 16 May 2024, Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership involving access to Reddit’s Data API. The announcement described bringing Reddit content into ChatGPT and other products, AI-powered features for Reddit, and OpenAI becoming an advertising partner.
That announcement contradicts a simple story in which Google’s relationship made OpenAI categorically unable to access Reddit. It does not establish the frequency of Reddit citations for any current query, disclose every commercial term or guarantee that an individual post will appear.
What Reddit said about crawlers
On 25 June 2024, Reddit announced an upcoming robots.txt update and continued rate-limiting or blocking of unknown crawlers. It also described continued access for good-faith non-commercial actors such as researchers and the Internet Archive. These controls should be considered alongside authorized API arrangements.
Reddit’s Public Content Policy explains that licensing arrangements include restrictions intended to protect users, including handling deleted content. Public availability should not be treated as unrestricted permission for commercial collection or reuse. Check the applicable terms for your intended access.
Training crawlers and search crawlers have different roles
OpenAI documents GPTBot as a crawler for content that may be used to train its foundation models. OAI-SearchBot supports discovery in ChatGPT search. The two robots.txt settings are independent: a publisher can permit search crawling while disallowing training crawling.
OpenAI also distinguishes ChatGPT-User, which can visit pages in response to user actions and is not its automatic search crawler. Its documentation notes that robots.txt rules may not apply to those user-initiated visits.
A GPTBot block therefore should not be described as a universal removal from ChatGPT. Conversely, allowing search crawling is an access decision, not a promise of citations, traffic or ranking.
How to assess a citation-drop claim
Treat a visibility study as a measurement of its stated sample. Look for the observation dates, query set, model or product, language, geography, repeat runs and definition of a citation. A percentage change without a denominator can conceal a small or unrepresentative sample.
Keep crawling, retrieval and the links displayed in a final answer separate in your analysis. A study of visible citations alone cannot establish that a provider stopped fetching a site or terminated a licensing agreement. These are editorial evaluation questions, not a new TecVarsity visibility study.
A practical publisher review
Document your goals for discovery and content reuse before changing crawler rules. Review the current robots.txt file, hosting restrictions and observed bot requests together. Keep access decisions reversible and record when each change was made so later measurements have context.
For commercial API use or licensing decisions, consult current provider terms and appropriate advisers. This article does not determine legal permission for a particular scraping project, recommend bypassing access controls or change TecVarsity’s crawler settings.
