Marketing ROI: model contribution, not just revenue
Understand why a campaign can generate revenue and still fail to cover its marketing spend.
Start with a transparent set of assumptions
A planning model should show the monthly spend, expected leads, close rate, average first-sale revenue and gross margin. None of these inputs is a guaranteed outcome. Use a conservative and an optimistic scenario to understand how sensitive the plan is.
Convert leads into customers carefully
Multiply qualified leads by the lead-to-customer rate. Forty leads at ten percent gives four expected customers. In a forecast this is an average, not a promise that exactly four people will buy. Distinguish raw form submissions from genuinely qualified enquiries.
Revenue is only the starting point
Four customers spending fifteen thousand rupees produce sixty thousand rupees in revenue. At a sixty-percent gross margin, gross profit before marketing is thirty-six thousand rupees. Subtract a twenty-thousand-rupee marketing cost and the model leaves sixteen thousand rupees of contribution.
Understand the ROI calculation
In this simplified model, marketing ROI is contribution after marketing divided by marketing spend. Sixteen thousand divided by twenty thousand is eighty percent. The figure excludes fixed overheads, taxes, repeat purchases and changes in working capital. Use consistent definitions when comparing reports.
Check the break-even point
Divide marketing spend by gross profit per new customer to estimate break-even customers, rounding up to the next whole customer. If margin or average sale is zero, the campaign cannot recover a positive spend under this model. A zero spend does not produce a meaningful percentage ROI.
Use the model to ask better questions
Try the free ROI calculator, then vary one assumption at a time. A small improvement in close rate may matter more than extra traffic. Compare the assumptions with your actual sales records before increasing the budget.
